Contests

by prom9485
Every quarter, PROMPT hosts a contest with one winner in each genre (fiction, poetry, non-fiction, and other arts). Entries must be in response to the prompt, although this may be taken very liberally.

PROMPT is now accepting submissions for our Fall 2012 contest!

The prompt this quarter is Origins, but remember: our prompt is totally open to your artistic interpretation. Our guidelines for submission formatting and such can be found here. Stay tuned for more information about prizes. They're going to be good, I promise.

Submissions

We're now accepting submissions for our Fall 2012 contest! (Not interested but still want to submit? We'll be accepting submissions for our online publication later in the quarter; don't worry.)

We publish the work of Northwestern undergrads from any and all departments. We publish fiction, poetry, creative non-fiction, visual art, and anything in between.

Submission Guidelines

We accept all genres, including:

  • Fiction
  • Creative non-fiction
  • Poetry
  • Playwriting
  • Visual Art
  • Photography
  • Video
  • Experimental

Response Time
We will respond to you as soon as possible to let you know that we have received your submission; however, we will not be able to tell you whether or not your submission has been accepted until one to two weeks before our publishing deadline.

Process
PROMPT reads submissions blindly, which means that to ensure a neutral point of view, our genre editors and staff members don't know the identities of the pieces' authors until after they make decisions on what to accept and reject. Ultimately, our genre editors–in fiction, creative non-fiction, poetry, and other arts–make the final decisions on what to include in our issues.

Simultaneous Submissions
Simultaneous submissions are welcomed and encouraged. Please contact us immediately if a piece that you've submitted is accepted for publication elsewhere.

Length
There are no set limits on submission length, especially because we do most of our publishing online. In our annual print issue, however, pieces over 10 pages are less likely to be accepted due to space limitations. Of course, quality will always win out over quantity, so if your story is good and needs more than 10 pages to be told, send it in.

Format
We accept only electronic submissions.

Please format your document like so:

  • 12 pt font
  • 1" margins all around
  • double spaced
  • pages numbered

ONLY include your title on the manuscript. Your name should NOT appear anywhere on the manuscript. In the body of your e-mail, please include:

  • your name
  • contact information (e-mail address)
  • the title and genre of your piece
